At the beginning of the eighth century there was a monastery south of the Rhine in Rinderen near Cleves. This monastery was dedicated to Martin and owned properties, farms and lands in the meadow area. In 750 the monastery was closed and the land was acquired in a Grundherrschaft, which passed to the monastery of Echternach in Luxembourg. The designation Sivenar appears in the excise lists that have been preserved. It can be concluded from this that around 720 - 730 an estate on the territory of the current Oud-Zevenaar belonged to the Rinderen monastery.

"It is likely that Saint Martin or one of his successors had a church built nearby. The current late Gothic church building dates from 1300-1350. Oud-Zevenaar used to be a place of pilgrimage. Many miracles seem to have occurred near the statue. Our Lady of Distress, which was placed in the church in 1440 and was stolen in 1975. The church now houses a replica. The stained glass windows depicting the seven sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary were made in 1931 the glazier Joep Nicolas. Next to the main entrance there is a stone that indicates the height of 15.25 cm above sea level."Source: 'Information board of the M'OOY-OUD-ZEVENAAR Working Group'
