The old clock tower was built around 1875 on the site of the Haniel & Lueg iron foundry and served as a gatekeeper's house at the time. In order to preserve the historic building, the companies Hochtief, NPC and the Düsseldorf employment office - as part of a job creation measure - extensively renovated the clock tower in 1995.

A brick tower stands out of place but immovable in front of the employment agency. He has seen the glory days of industrialization and the decline of the iron industry. The clock tower was the gatekeeper's cottage for the iron foundry Haniel & Lueg.
From 1875 to 1975 workers flocked to the factory premises, then the gates closed forever. Private sponsors, Hochtief and a job creation measure saved the tower in 1995 with extensive renovations. It now houses the "Herrmann Harry Schmitz Institute".
