Music theater at the Volksgarten, Linz

The Musiktheater am Volksgarten in Linz is one of the most modern opera houses in Europe. Built according to plans by London architect Terry Pawson, its opening ceremony took place on April 11, 2013 and has since become one of the cultural highlights of the UNESCO City of Media Arts on the Danube.

The music theater, located at the end of Landstraße, offers a wonderful ambience for operas, operettas, ballet and musicals. These are staged using multimedia and accompanied by the latest technology - the multifaceted program will fascinate you.

Guaranteed an unforgettable evening at the theater in a loving atmosphere in the middle of downtown Linz. Europe's most modern opera house has a lot to offer, and the Main Hall, Foyer Stage, BlackBox and BlackBox Lounge offer uninhibited views of the performances on stage.

The Linz Theater and Opera House was built between 2008 and 2013 according to plans by Terry Pawson and opened on April 11, 2013.

After political disputes about the location, 2 architectural competitions and a referendum in 2000, which showed a clear rejection, construction was delayed by years. In 2003, after renewed efforts by the "Freunde des Musiktheater" association, which was founded in 1984, the Upper Austrian state parliament made a decision in principle to build it.

In 2013, the Landestheater Linz received its new, long-awaited venue: the Musiktheater am Volksgarten. After four decades of political debates about the cultural building, this home of the opera/operetta, the ballet, the newly founded musical division and the Bruckner Orchestra Linz was opened on April 11, 2013 after a four-year construction period - on budget and on schedule. With the most modern opera house in Europe, which was realized by ArchitekturConsult ZT GmbH and Archinauten according to a design by the London architect Terry Pawson, a new cultural era is beginning due to the technical, architectural and ecological qualities of the new building and the considerable level of public comfort.

The fascination of the theater begins in the auditorium - whether in the Great Hall (up to 1,200 seats), in the BlackBox (up to 270 seats), in the BlackBoxLounge (up to 150 seats), in the Orchestra Hall (up to 200 seats) or on the Foyer stage (variable seats).

The audience is also welcome outside of the performances and can gain a playful insight into the subject matter in the KlangFoyer. This adventure course, which is unique in the theater world, was created in cooperation with the Ars Electronica Futurelab and surprises on many sensory levels.

In this way, the theater can be understood as a place where artists and audiences are present in person, linked to the rapid development of media technology.
