Sixty pairs of shoes commemorate the horrors of war that took place on the Danube embankment in Budapest, Hungary, where in 1944 and 1945 fascist Arrow Cross militiamen shot thousands of Jews into the water. Before being shot, the victims were forced to remove their shoes, which were a valuable commodity during the war.

The different styles and sizes of the shoes show that no one was spared - men, women or children. Today, candles are placed in the shoes, flowers are placed next to them, and the memorial plaque reads: "In memory of the victims shot into the Danube by the Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-1945. Erected on April 16, 2005."
