Since 2015, the »Persil« steam storage locomotive has stood at the new roundabout on the ring road in Hitdorf as a technical monument.

It is reminiscent of the former small train Langenfeld Monheim Hitdorf, which passed here from 1908 to 1986.

The locomotive set up in Hitdorf was built in 1914 by the Aktiengesellschaft für Lokomotivbau Hohenzollern (factory number 3307).

built. The machine was delivered to the company Henkel, which produces detergents and cleaning agents, where it was sold under the

Name of the detergent "Persil" used in the Düsseldorf-Reisholz plant for shunting operations. It was the first locomotive that

was used at Henkel. Previously in the plant there were wagons with cable winches, toggle bars (lever bars) and

    muscle power has been moved.

In 1951 the locomotive was sold to the company Papier & Pappe in Viersen-Süchteln. She then came to the United

Packaging company (formerly Rheinische Pappenfabrik) in Monheim-Blee and was used there for maneuvering and for trips to the

Hitdorf port used. The locomotive has stood on a playground in Hitdorf since 1982.

In 2012, the city district council decided that the temporary storage as part of the construction of the flood protection

Historical monument "Persil" steam storage locomotive renovated and permanently erected in the fringe area of the new Hitdorfer roundabout

    and preserved as a monument.

    steam storage locomotives

The steam storage locomotive is a 19th century invention. In contrast to a steam locomotive, the zum

Drive required Steam is not generated on the machine, but steam supplied from the outside heats up the steam in the boiler

    Water.

This type was mainly used in larger works, in smelting works and collieries. The advantage was economic

Use of the steam generated in the boiler houses on every larger factory site and in fireless operation

which prevented the fire hazard caused by flying sparks. The steam storage locomotive was therefore one

eminently suitable shunting locomotive, especially for industrial companies with an increased risk of fire.

"... The Hitdorf machine, with two axles and a weight of 24 tons, is one of the relatively small steam storage locomotives for standard gauge operation. It is equipped with an internal engine: the two cylinders are located between the frame under the driver's cab, as are the two connecting rods for transmitting the power Power to the front wheels Externally mounted connecting rods connect the front and rear wheels.

The boiler is an important functional part of a steam storage locomotive. It consists of riveted steel plates and is surrounded by a thin sheet metal shell about two centimeters apart. A further, outer sheet metal casing followed over tire-shaped spacers. The insulation between these two sheet metal walls ensured the lowest possible heat loss from the steam stored in the boiler.

The filler neck for introducing the steam can still be seen on the front end of the boiler. The dome sits on the cauldron with its encasement. In front of the dome is the sandbox, from which the sand required for braking was fed through pipes in front of or behind the front wheels. The corresponding sandboxes for the rear wheels are arranged under the driver's cab.

The hand throw brake and the hand crank for regulating the steam supply to the cylinders have been preserved in the driver's cab. The instruments on the rear end of the boiler (four instruments after the connecting pieces) have not been preserved. ..."
