In connection with the origin of the cross and the resulting pilgrimage site, it is today suggested that it may have originally been a pagan place of worship in this wooded area east of Ghent, which was honored during the Christianization period by placing a cross.

This place of pilgrimage would originally have been a pagan place of worship, which was honored during the Christianization period by placing a cross. Nearby are the castles of Notax (already mentioned in 1313) - also popularly called the 'haunted castle' and Succa (15th century)
