During a walk on Pehlitzwerder you will find a remarkable variety of a total of 183 tree and shrub species. These include impressive examples of English oak, grove beech and juniper.
For a long time Pehlitzwerder was popularly known as the “goat island” because cows, sheep and goats grazed here. In this way, numerous "hat trees" were able to grow into stately solitary trees without competition from young trees.
The most magnificent and oldest examples include 300 to 500-year-old oaks (Quercus robur), a 400-year-old sessile oak (Quercus petraea), two 200-year-old hornbeams (Carpinus betulus), and an 80-year-old hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna ) and a 120-year-old juniper (Juniperus communis), mighty service berries (Sorbus torminalis) and old, overgrown domestic pears.
Near the remains of the foundations of the Mariensee Monastery you can find an imposing, mighty winter lime tree (Tilia cordata) almost 500 years old. Most of the trees are on the list of natural monuments and therefore enjoy special protection.
