The natural monument Großer Stein is a granite block that shows clear signs of processing. There used to be an information board here that provided information about it:
“Between 1825 and 1828 a considerable part of the boulder was blown off for the production of a granite bowl for the Berlin Lustgarten. However, the material turned out to be too soft for further processing. "In the same period, the well-known granite bowl was made from a fragment of the Great Margrave Stone near Rauen.
The grooves on the Großer Stein, which is almost 4 meters high and weighs around 60 tons despite being worked on, are remnants of the drill holes, which reached over 4 meters deep into the stone and became visible through the split of the stone. Dry wooden wedges were hammered into these holes, which were then brought to swell with water. Through these forces, the stone was slowly blasted with a smooth fracture surface.
"It was the art of the stone cleavers and stonemasons of the time to look at the granite's natural surface structure and to carry out the split in such a way that the block disintegrated into the desired shape. Since the split surfaces are fresh compared to the stones formed by the ice, the structure is crystalline the stones can still be seen today. "
