The whole campsite, as well as the ruined monastery and the Parsteiner See are an idyllic spot and there is also a pretty café on the premises.

The history of the Mariensee monastery ruin began when the Ascanian margrave brothers, Johann I and Otto III, shared control of the country. The Lehnin monastery was considered to be the home monastery of Margrave Otto III. and his descendants. It was therefore necessary for Johann I and his descendants to build a burial place. In 1260 the Cistercians started building the daughter monastery Mariensee on the Pehlitzwerder. The remains of the foundations still show the planned three-aisled Romanesque basilica of enormous dimensions.
Probably because of the arduous management, the monks decided to move the monastery to the immediate vicinity of the Choriner See. In 1273 the margrave confirmed the official relocation and the name was changed to Chorin Monastery. Most of the building material for the Mariensee monastery was removed and used for the construction of the new monastery complex in Chorin.
