The Afsluitdijk is a flood defense between North Holland and Friesland to protect the Netherlands against high water. The construction of the IJsselmeer has been closed off from the Wadden Sea.
Due to construction work from 2019 to 2022, the cycle path will be closed. An alternative to cross the dike is the free bus service. Bicycles are of course allowed.
September 1, 2020
Due to construction work from 2019 to 2022, the bike path is completely closed. A bus transfer is free of charge.
Further information: deafsluitdijk.nl/fietsbus-dienstregeling
The bus transfer takes about 30 minutes. and is free. The distance is approx. 27 km. Allegedly fit 15 wheels in, in our transfer with 8 wheels and complete luggage the bus was already quite busy, certainly you have to take the luggage if necessary.
July 12, 2019
The dike is complete for cycle traffic until the end of 2019 and at least partially closed until April 2022. There is an hourly shuttle bus. On selected Sundays (4 in 2019) the dyke for cycling is open.

In 2016 we were on the Holland tour from Rotterdam to Celle.
Another cyclist-hiker gave us the tip in advance, to take the train from Germany and to cycle home with almost uninterrupted tail wind. (08

Even if you do not want to cross the IJsselmeer by bike, the dike is definitely worth seeing. A detour is worthwhile.

Attention! From 01.04.19 locked for cyclists for three years. construction work

The dike is 32 km long and 90 meters wide. Its height was initially 7.25 meters above Amsterdam level (NAP = Normaal Amsterdams Peil) and is now about 10 meters above NAP. At the former interface of the completion (about on the western third point) is the Vlietermonument with observation tower, parking and restaurants (Wikipedia).

Anyone planning a tour around the IJsselmeer should not set the direction he goes until he is there and keep his wet finger in the wind. :-) We had 333 km headwind in our orbit.

But even with headwind it was a great experience.
Construction work on the final dike should take place in 2018. The cycle path should probably also come to the other side of the dike, away from the motorway .... Then I'll definitely drive it again!

A masterpiece to build this dam. Separates salt water from fresh water. Here you can also go by bike or on foot

The final dyke (Dutch Afsluitdijk, West Frisian Ofslútdyk) is the most important single structure of the Zuiderzeewerke for land reclamation and coastal protection in the Netherlands. It was completed in 1932 and consists of a dam and two tides. On the dam run a highway (the A 7) and a bike and walkway. Through the Sperrdamm the inland waters of the IJsselmeer developed from the tidal Ästuar Zuiderzee (the Südersee).

Since the Germans can cut off a big slice. The bus transfer works perfectly.
