On Kornwerderzand at the end of the Afsluitdijk are the famous casemates, mostly hidden under sand. The time before and after May 1940 is relived within the meter-thick walls: the story of mobilization and life in and around the casemates is told in six casemates.
The German Blitzkrieg was stopped at this unique location, supported by the Navy. The sleeping quarters, the switchboard, the shelf kitchen and an extensive collection of weapons can be viewed here.
