Via Belgica is the name given in the twentieth century to a 400-kilometre-long old Roman military road. The road ran from Boulogne-sur-Mer via Arras, Bavay, Tongeren, Maastricht and Heerlen to Jülich and Cologne. Via Belgica was an important part of a large and complex network of (water)ways that extended to the furthest corners of the Roman empire. At the junctions, the Romans built guard posts or small villages emerged that grew into larger settlements.
