The “stone obelisk on the rose hill” can be seen in the academy park at the intersection of Fohlenhofallee and the large Querallee. This sculpture is usually referred to as the "engagement stone" because - according to tradition - a gloriette once stood here, on which Maria Theresa is said to have got engaged to Franz von Lothringen in 1735.
As gloriettes traditionally stood on a knoll at the time, the monument is located on a gentle hill, which has been planted with trees. The sculpture consists of a stepped, conical marble monolith standing on a natural stone base. The top forms a globe with an equatorial and meridian ring.
The dates of the imperial visits to the Academy by Maria Theresa, Joseph II, Franz I and Franz Joseph I from 1769 to 1899 are engraved on the marble obelisk.
