The square was laid out in 1899, and from July 24, 1900, a regular weekly market took place there. The market takes place every working day (in the morning) - this is unique for Cologne. The opening of the street carnivals has been taking place on Wilhelmplatz for years, always on Weiberfastnacht Thursday at 9:11 a.m.
It was named after the German Emperor Wilhelm I.

In 2016 "Tante Olga" opened in Sülz - Cologne's 1st unpackaged store. The branch in Nippes opened at the beginning of 2019.
