Hiking Highlight
The city name is not clear. "Fjord" is the bay. "Eckern" could come from the beechnuts of the red beech. These attracted many squirrels. The squirrel is the heraldic animal of Eckernförde. Danish means "egern". So also the little rodent could be the namesake.

The medieval Rathausmarkt in Eckernförde is surrounded by many well-preserved commercial buildings. Wednesdays and Saturdays are held weekly market here. The highlight of the Rathausmarkt is the old town hall, which today houses the city museum. The Rathausmarkt is a little further south of this location.
The picturesque transition from the sea to the charming hinterland and the original bogs makes Eckernförde unique. Eckernförde is a city with charm and flair. City, harbor and the great Baltic Sea beach merge seamlessly into each other.
Here you can stroll through the old town with its romantic streets, inhale the fresh sea air in the harbor and listen to the sound of the waves on the beach.
