The North American wapiti is the largest of all red deer; the bulls reach a weight of around 350 kg. The elk's antlers are very strong and even and can weigh up to 20 kg. Male deer are dangerous animals with these powerful antlers. Especially during the rutting season, the animal keepers have to be extremely careful when entering the enclosure; During peak rut the enclosure is not entered at all. Wapiti bulls also severely attack their male counterparts. Therefore, only one male animal is kept at Sababurg Zoo and male offspring are released as quickly as possible. The term wapiti is of Indian origin and means something like “white bottom”.Source: tierpark-sababurg.de
