Particularly worth seeing in Niehl is the "Alt St. Katharina" church, consecrated in 1260, also known as "Niehler Dömchen". The Romanesque west tower of the church, which probably dates from the 12th century, is the oldest structure in Niehl.
The Niehler Dömchen, the little sister of Cologne Cathedral, was once the only place of worship far and wide, so that all residents of Nippes and Mauenheim had to accept a 45-minute walk on Sundays.

"Alt-St. Katharina, also called "Niehler Dömchen", is one of the small Romanesque churches in Cologne. The formerly three-aisled basilica was probably built in the 12th century with a west tower and belonged to the Cologne Kunibert Foundation, as can be seen from a document from the provost Bruno of St. Kunibert from March 1236. It was the only parish church mentioned for the area from Nippes to Niehl, which is still commemorated today by the street "Niehler Kirchweg". In 1260 it was consecrated to St. Katharina. The southern aisle was demolished in the 13th century and a Gothic central nave with a choir was added to the east of the tower. In 1894 the northern aisle was built on the old foundations. The old brick flooring was replaced in 1714 by trachyte slabs from Königswinter. The painting of the vault from the 16th century was restored in 1921. restored.

Two bells, which were installed in 1977, call the faithful to worship.

There are some old works of art in the church. The first thing that catches your eye is the pulpit with a picture of St. Catherine and the year 1622. To the side of the altar you can see a crowned Madonna, which dates from the 16th century. A sculpture of the Last Supper dates from around 1420. The choir windows with depictions of saints were designed by Professor Pieper in 1978. In the left part of the church is the organ, built in 1982 by Gerd Weyland (Opladen). The church's baptismal font is now in Neu-St. Katharina.

In 1747 an icebreaker was built east of the church to protect against ice drifts, and a figure of St. John of Nepomuk was adorned on its southeast corner. The floods in 1780 and 1784 made it necessary to build the church wall, which was placed under the protection of St. John of Nepomuk, whose statue with the year 1747 still adorns the wall today. Until 1868, the Niehl churchyard was located in the area of the church, where the deceased from Nippes and Mauenheim were buried. The family grave of Mayor Denhoven can still be seen to the east of the church. In 1973, during excavation work in the church, bones were found which are attributed to the canon and professor of constitutional and canon law at the old Cologne University, Franz Karl Josef von Hillesheim (died November 12, 1803)..."
