This giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is 150 years old. It always keeps its needles, just like the coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) on the other side of the Flora pond. In contrast, the dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) at the Alpinum pond is a different species and sheds its needles in winter
