The creation of the forest chapel near Rheinbach goes back to a miracle of appearance when forest workers thought they recognized the Christ monogram IHS in the grain of a felled and freshly split beech tree in 1681. The chapel was built at the site of the tree in memory of the “Holy Name of Jesus”. It was immediately accepted by the population as a pilgrimage destination.
To look after the numerous pilgrims, a monastery was founded in 1686, which was initially populated by Franciscans and finally by Servites, who looked after the pilgrimage site on the Kreuzberg near Bonn.
In 1846 the monastery buildings were demolished. The foundations of the monastery are marked by a wall.
