Strictly speaking, two different museums are housed here, which share the entrance area: on the right hand side of the building complex is the "Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum" (named here as a highlight), it has the programmatic subtitle "Cultures of the World"; on the left hand side (towards the church building of St. Cecilia) is the "Schnütgen Museum", which focuses on art from the Middle Ages.

The Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum is one of Cologne's municipal museums. With the ethnological collections, it houses numerous exhibits that provide insights into the cultures of the world. In the entrance hall there is an impressively large rice granary from Indonesia.
