If you descend from the Heidelberg Castle down to the old town, you pass the Kornmarkt, past the former Elector's Pharmacy, past the Ritter House to the Heiliggeistkirche. It was the burial place of the princes. From there you can reach the banks of the Neckar in a few minutes and the old bridge with the bridge gate. If you have time, cross the Neckar and climb up the other side to the Philosophenweg, from where you have a magnificent view of the castle, the river Neckar and the old town.Worth seeing in the old town are various university buildings (for example, the New and Old University, the Studentenkarzer, the Old Arsenal - now Mensa of the University - and the Art Nouveau built University Library). In 1368, Elector Ruprecht I founded the University of Heidelberg, the oldest in Germany.
