New fortifications of the castle district to the south, built under Ludwig V in the first half of the 16th century, dated from 1531 to 1541 by building inscriptions. The construction of the gate tower resulted in the existing outer wall being reinforced from 1 to 7 m.
The gate tower is a square building with a total height of 40 m (measured from the bottom of the moat), which is dated from 1531 to 1541 by building inscriptions. It is part of the castle fortifications built under Elector Ludwig V.
The lower part of the tower contains a 10 m high vaulted room, which can be referred to as a castle dungeon. It was divided by a planked ceiling, and the lowest room, still 6 m high, could only be reached through a hole in this ceiling. Above the passage with the (renewed) portcullis are three upper floors, the top of which served as the tower guard's apartment.
On the entrance side of the gate tower, the electoral coat of arms used to be displayed in a sandstone frame, held by two lions. To the left and right of it are two giant figures, dated 1534 and 1536, with very carefully and detailed armor.
