The Bartel lock was built in 1638 in connection with the reclamation of the Enge Wormer, and connected the Westerveer and Enge Wormerringsloot with the Zaan. Initially the lock was called the Westersluis, it is not known when or why this name was changed. The lock was mainly used in the first years by the rusk vendors who transported the Wormer rusk to Amsterdam. With the demise of the Wormer rusk bakery, the significance of the lock also declined. The Bartel lock was filled in in the 60s of the 20th century; the name lives on in the hamlet.
