The Grebbeberg military cemetery near Rhenen is the first war cemetery in the Netherlands. Only soldiers are buried here. This cemetery on the Grebbeberg is the final resting place of more than 400 Dutch soldiers who fell in May 1940 in the battle for the southernmost part of the Grebbe Line. They are buried in the ground they have defended with their lives. After the surrender, the Dutch and German victims were buried on the site of the battle.

After the war, the remains of the German soldiers were transferred and reburied at the cemetery for German war dead in Ysselsteyn (Limburg). Since 1946, soldiers who died elsewhere in the Netherlands in those May days have been reburied on the Grebbeberg and who were buried in family graves. The plot now has more than 850 graves.

Since 1946, this cemetery has served as a national memorial site. The military memorial ceremony takes place here on National Remembrance Day, May 4. In addition, on Whit Monday, a commemoration of the former Eighth Infantry Regiment takes place, where all colleagues who died during the May days are remembered.
