Konik Horses in Afferdense en Deestse Waarden

Beautiful piece of nature, but you cannot get there at high tide

The first large grazers have come to the Afferdense and Deestse Waarden along the Waal. These are konik horses that graze the area. This is good for the variation in nature.In recent years, Staatsbosbeheer has collaborated with Rijkswaterstaat on the redevelopment of the Natura 2000 area of Afferdense and Deestse Waarden. A co-flowing side channel of 4.5 kilometers has been constructed and parts of the site have been lowered. Here the river is allowed to run its course and bring changes to the landscape due to high and low water. The river nature is already abundantly found by countless birds and an attractive habitat for plants and animals has been created in and around the secondary channel. Staatsbosbeheer and Rijkswaterstaat are jointly involved in the management of the nature reserve.
