The last viewpoint of the hiking tour and also the most beautiful. Afterwards there is a trailing Keuzweg down to the valley.

From the Rengeskopf you have a beautiful view of the village of Schmelz and the former Bettinger molten iron.

Nice view of Schmelz and the old Bettinger iron smelter

          History Bettinger Eisenschmelze

Bettinger Eisenschmelze was founded by the Lords of Lรฉnoncourt around 1700 and shut down again in 1868. After that, the company continued to be used as a sawmill and timber trading company. Bettinger Eisenschmelze gave its name to the community of Schmelz, which was founded in 1937 from the towns of AuรŸen and Bettingen. Production at the smelter was subject to fluctuations over time and was primarily used to supply the Dillinger smelter with pig iron. At the beginning of the 19th century, Bettinger Schmelze covered 63% of Dillingen's pig iron requirements. But everyday objects were also produced. The scope of production can be proven with the following figures: In 1801, 400 tons of pig iron were produced in a 7-8 meter high blast furnace, from which, among other things, Around 36,000 scythes, 15,000 sickles, 9,000 kg shovels, 9,000 kg frying pans and 500 winches were made. The Bettinger iron smelter was located on a canal leading away from the Prims and used the water power to operate the stamping mill (crushing of the ore rock) and to drive the bellows to supply fresh air to the blast furnaces. In the vicinity were the forest as a base for the extraction of charcoal as well as the ore and lime deposits (including Mรผhlenknippchen). The number of employees fluctuated greatly, averaging between 10-30 workers and 3-4 foremen. The 1809 smelter had the highest number of employees with 62 employees. In addition, there were 6-8 times the number of charcoal burners, ore graves and carters. Source: Text information board
