Although the city of Polonnaruwa was declared a capital by King Vijayabahu I in 1070 CE, it is his grandson Parakramabahu I that is known for bringing the city to prominence. For a time, the city played a crucial religious and political role and remnants of that archeology still exist today. We came to explore ancient history of the kings, which was spectacular. Unfortunately we haven't got the chance of seeing elephants in one of the elephant-filled parks. Definitely a good reason to visit again.

The ancient royal city of Polonnaruwa is one of the main tourist attractions in Sri Lanka and is one of 7 World Heritage Sites in the country. The irrigation system of rice fields, which was created next to the royal city, is still in full use today. In addition to the ruined city, which can be perfectly explored by bike, definitely worth the museum, where the tickets must be purchased.
