The construction of St. Mary's Church in Stapel was completed in 1291. It is the oldest and largest church in the present office Neuhaus. For a long time she was the main church there; the first Lutheran preacher is on record here in 1543.

The tower is probably the oldest part of the church. Its walls are up to two meters thick, the spire, which resembles a cap, covers 23,000 oak shingles. From the 37 meter high tower you have a fantastic view of the Elbmarsch. As before, the hands of the clock tower are moved by a mechanical movement from the year 1873. The oldest of the three bells dates from 1408.

The largest structural change of the church was between 1851 and 1855. The roof of the nave was renewed. The windows were changed neo-Gothic. The entire interior was given a new shape. The ornate baroque altar came from the east choir to the south side of the church.
