From a tower, a wooden staircase leads up to a lookout point with a beautiful view of the castles Hohbarr and Groß Geroldseck.
The complex consists of two castles, each on a rocky plateau. The eastern "Greater or Greifenstein" from the 12th century and the western "Greifenstein" from the 13th century

To the left of the staircase of the Greifensteiner castles is a small or front griffin stone with remnants of the mighty tower, which was built in the 12th century. Right next to it the younger large or Hintergreifenstein, in between a third tower, which we can climb.

The current ruin was first mentioned in 1141 and consisted of two main buildings. It is located at 360 m and was built by Greifensteins, who served the bishop of Strasbourg.
During the 30-year war, large parts of the mountain were destroyed and even after the castle was from 1516 belonged to the bishop, not rebuilt.
Rather, from the 17th century, the former castle walls were used to build the Fürstenberg Castle in Saverne, which was much cheaper than mining in the quarry ...
