A farm, to which a chapel probably belonged, is mentioned in the oldest goods register of the Prüm Abbey from the year 893. The first documented mention of the collegiate monastery in Kerpen dates back to 1178, when a prepositus de cerpene of the name Wecelinus was mentioned. In 1204 King Philip of Swabia bestowed the Kerpen Priory on Archbishop Adolf I of Cologne. The provosts were later appointed by the dukes of Jülich according to a certificate of award from Emperor Ludwig IV. In 1802 the monastery was abolished. The collegiate church was always the parish church at the same time.
