CULEMBORGSE GATE Probably built around 1400 with an arched passage and seventeenth century floor, covered by a saddle roof between gables (originally stepped gables). The facade on the city side was newly built in 1816; the arches of the gates were also renewed at that time. Two windows on the city side at floor height and a dormer in the roof.

Beyond the gate is a work of art called Mallejan. In the past, long objects were transported with a mallejan, eg tree trunks. Sometimes with one mallejan on which a tree trunk was balanced and sometimes with two mallejans so that the tree got wheels at the front and rear, as it were. One or more horses in front of it moved and the matter was controlled by manually changing the direction of the wheels.
The Culemborgse Poort or Huizenpoort in Buren was built around the year 1400 and is a national monument. Compared to the medieval more impressive Binnenpoort or Lanxmeersepoort of the nearby town of Culemborg, the gate of Buren is only a modest monument.Buren is a beautiful and quiet historic town with 2 museums and a flour mill and city park with ruins of Buren castle.
