Faaborg Church is part of an old monastery complex, built from 1477 onwards and now demolished.
The Church of the Holy Spirit was named after the monastic order that also built it. Compared to the size of the town, the church is very impressive:
It is 46 meters long, 19 meters wide in the nave, and 8 meters wide in the chancel.
The chancel contains monks' chairs from the Catholic period, as well as a beautiful church cabinet from the now-demolished St. Nicholas Church, of which only the bell tower remains.

The current parish church, the Church of the Holy Spirit, was not founded until the end of the 15th century. In 1477, the monastery was founded in Faaborg and approved by the Pope in Rome on March 14, 1478.

In the following period, church and monastery buildings were constructed, with the church choir and the north aisle, as well as the east wing of the monastery as the first phase. Today, clear traces of the destroyed monastery, which had two vaulted floors, can be seen on the north side of the church.

The church today appears as a large and beautiful church with monastic pews from the Catholic period. The original altarpiece of the Church of the Holy Spirit, dating from 1511, is now in the National Museum in Copenhagen and is a treasure from that period. The current altarpiece dates from 1855 and was painted by Vilhelm Marstrand.
