The first written mention of the old chapel comes from November 20, 1420. There is a legend about the time it was built. It says that where after the end of the Black Plague a team of oxen that had been driven out of the city stopped, a chapel should be built. Since 1543 (Geldrischen Feud) it has been called the Mother of God House. At that time the Carmelites set up a Way of the Cross from their church in Bonner Strasse to the Mother of God House.

The pilgrimage chapel here opposite the old Panzerkaserne is called the "Mother of God's House." The pilgrimage site was first documented at the end of 1420. Translated into High German, it reads: "When the Black Plague raged in Düren, the people of Düren promised that when the plague ended, they would build a chapel for the Mother of God on a certain spot. The site was to be where a team of oxen, driven out of the city, had stopped." ... So that was where the old Mother of God's House stands today.
