A Tobruk (sometimes also written as Tobruk) is a kind of bunker. The name is derived from the town of Tobruk in Libya, where these structures were first built by the Italian army in 1941.
Later, the model, a reinforced concrete fighting area with an octagonal or round hole at the top, was taken over by the Germans and introduced in Europe from 1942 onwards.
The bunker usually served as an observation post or machine gun nest with a mortar stand. The building appeared as a free-standing construction, but also as part of a larger bunker.
