Tapsluisbunker Noord and Tapsluisbunker Zuid provide the water supply, via the Kempisch Canal, to the Antitankgracht (ATG).

Two taps on either side of the canal 'drain the water' and regulate the supply. The tap mechanism of Tapsluisbunker Noord is well preserved and can still be operated manually. Technical data: the roof and outer walls are 1.3 meters thick and can withstand 150 mm of artillery. Both sluice bunkers have two floors; downstairs the Antitankgracht was defended, the upper floor protected the towpath.

During the Battle of Lochtenberg, murderous fire was spread from this Tapsluisbunker Noord to the other side. Canadian infantry was hidden in foxholes and old Belgian trenches.

In the end, this bunker (just like the Tapsluisbunker South) was knocked out.

Bomb and bullet impacts testify to a fierce battle. During the period from September 24 to October 2, 122 Canadian servicemen were killed by barrages at this location.

I had the pleasure of being able to visit these bunkers and site, exceptionally, with a private guide as part of the 'Battle of Lochtenberg'.

Quite an impressive experience of a "forgotten battle".
