The Gemaal De Liemers is one of the most important works of art within the water board. It was built in 1981 about a hundred meters from the place where the steam pumping station used to be.

The location has great historical value for the history of the Rijn en IJssel Water Board. The current pumping station is modern, but historical elements of the former steam pumping station have been preserved.

The land on which the steam pumping station was built was purchased from J.W. Harbers in Angerlo.

In 1981, the monumental pumping station in Giesbeek was demolished. The pumping station, which was built in 1880, was very outdated and 'out of date'. The construction of the new pumping station, which was opened in 1982 by the Rijn en IJssel polder district, cost 6.5 million guilders.

Around 1980 an attempt was made to preserve the old pumping station near Giesbeek, but that failed. In those years there was little awareness of the 'industrial heritage'. There was someone who thought: "We have to create a memory of the old pumping station." And so it happened. A large monument has been cast in a large concrete block exactly on top of the demolished pumping station. It is the only remaining original centrifugal pump with flywheel from the old pumping station and dates from 1882. The pump was driven by a steam engine at the time. Under the pump it says: ...Because I have done my job faithfully, I was allowed to remain here as a reminder. 1882-1981” And so it is! (Source: Leven in de Liemers)
