Middachten Castle has its origins in 1190. It was given its current form at the end of the 17th century when architect Jacob Roman and Steven Vennecool adapted the fortified castle to the requirements of the time, commissioned by Godard van Reede, 1st Count of Ethlone. Middachten has been inherited over the centuries, several times via the female line and thus became connected to the Middachten, Raesvelt, Reede, Van Aldenburg Bentinck and Ortenburg families.
