In 1869, despite the initial resistance of the Degerloch population, a military firing range was built on the Dornhalde and was used for shooting training for almost 100 years.
The Dornhalde, where burials have taken place since the mid-1970s, is historically interesting not only because of the graves of the three RAF terrorists.
Based on plans from 1970, Stuttgart wanted to realize not a classic forest cemetery, but a cemetery in the forest at the highest technical and design level on the Dornhalde.
The philosopher Max Bense and his wife Elisabeth Walter-Bense, the writer Margarete Hansmann and the writer Peter O. Chotjewitz are also buried on the Dornhalde.
