Mining in Lucherberg did not take off until the turn of the 20th century. At that time, Max Kestner, the former director of the Maria-Theresia lignite mine in Herzogenrath, succeeded in inspiring the Cologne industrialists Fritz Voss and Alfred vom Rath with his idea of building a large-scale open-pit lignite mine in Lucherberg with attached briquette production. In 1897 he founded the Lucherberg union with them. Two years later, the residents of the place saw brisk construction activity. Briquette factory and daytime facilities of the mine were built.
