The Karner, an ossuary with a chapel, is probably a foundation of the Babenbergs, possibly Duke Heinrich the Elder of Mödling, who died in 1223, or Heinrich the Younger, who died in 1236. No written documents are known from the construction period. The Karner was first mentioned in a document in 1345. In the Middle Ages, the exhumed bones of the abandoned graves of the former cemetery around the Church of St. Othmar were stored in the cellar vault, which is accessible from the south side and closed with an iron gate
