The Erft rises a few kilometers south of Bad Münstereifel, where in the villages of Frohngau and Holzmühlheim, a good 400 meters above sea level, groundwater from the mountains flows as a stream down the foot of the Eifel. Having become a river, the Erft crosses the flat Börden landscape from Euskirchen in the midst of wide arable land, flows past villages, small towns, lignite excavators and large power plants, and also through recultivated landscape with new forests and lakes. After 104 kilometers it flows into the Rhine near Neuss at an altitude of only 26 meters above sea level. Source: erftverband.de/die-erft
