Here between the Petri Cathedral and the town hall there used to be the St. Petri Cemetery, which was reduced in size in 1523 and 1607 for the meat market that took place here. The market first took place here in 1384, after King Wenceslas granted the people of Bautzen this right in 1382. The northern part of the market area between the cathedral and the town hall is called the "Fleischmarkt" in Bautzen. The Fleischmarkt, together with the main market, forms the center of Bautzen's old town. The traditional Bautzen Christmas market has been held here since the 14th century. The Fleischmarkt is also the highest point in Bautzen's urban area (at 219 m above sea level).
