What was once used as a waste dump during the lead mining in Mechernich turned out in 1972 to the recreational park Mühlental in which also took place in the same year the Landesgartenschau.
Over the last few years, the mill park fell into a deep sleep. There were probably some events in that time but that was it.
Since 2016, the recreational park has been breathing new life into it bit by bit.
The beer garden, the summer toboggan run, children's playground and, of course, the Mühlensee are now available as highlights. At the moment we are continuing to invest and so a small fitness park and a coffee will be built. Further changes are in the planning.

At the suggestion of the former municipality Kommern, the mill valley devastated by early industrial activity (marked by heaps of leaded and leaded lead, waste deposits and demolished administrative buildings of the Pierath & Jung mining company) was renovated. The Mühlensee as the centerpiece of the recreational park Mühlental has in addition to its recreational value as the most urgent task to prevent the lead sand deposits from lying on the upper reaches of Bleibachs mining and Waschsandhaldengebiet in the lower reaches of the lead creek and the Rotbaches and the Erft.
On March 3, 1963, the final impoundment was begun. In 1972, the Landesgartenschau took place in the recreational park Mühlental.
