This avenue has been protected and owned by the municipality of Heers since 2005. This 420 meter long avenue originally provided access to the now disappeared castle of the Borchgrave-d'Altena family (Castle of Bovenlingen). The name refers to the red color of the footpath that was built at the time with the waste of red bricks used for the construction of the outbuildings at the castle.
