Please check local regulations for: Natuurreservaat Overbroek
The Overbroek-Egoven nature reserve is protected at the European level as part of the Natura 2000 area "Forests and Calcareous Grasslands of Haspengouw." Located between Heers and Gelinden, it is managed by Natuurpunt and is quite special for several reasons. Situated in the Herk valley, the nature reserve boasts a unique flora in the calcareous grasslands, poplar forests, wet meadows, and reed beds it encompasses. Perhaps the most famous are the wild daffodils found here in early spring and various rare plants that thrive in calcareous environments, including orchids.Overbroek is also well-known to geologists. Until just after the Second World War, marl was mined in three open-air quarries in Overbroek. At the end of the nineteenth century, these quarries became world-famous for the discovery of a vast number of well-preserved fossils of plants dating back many millions of years. These even included fossils of plants previously unknown.
