Bovelingen (or Schalkhoven) was a separate seigneury in the Middle Ages. The oldest known lord (1390) was Jan van Schalkhoven. It was probably Michel de Borchgrave who had the old castle replaced by a moated castle in Maasland style, with a French garden. It was drawn in this form around 1738 by Remacle Leloup. It was built around two courtyards situated behind each other. Around 1740 the castle was renovated into a U-shaped whole. The castle farm was built on the west side. Another renovation took place in 1790, giving the whole a late classical appearance. Finally, around 1900, the service buildings were replaced by the current ones in eclectic style. In 1947 a serious fire raged in which a large part of the castle went up in flames. The remains were demolished around 1955. Only the service buildings and the castle farm remained.
