The pilgrimage basilica St. Georg in Walldürn was built between 1698 and 1728. The stately church is the largest Eucharistic pilgrimage site in Germany. In 1962, Pope John XXIII appointed the church to the minor basilica. The origin of the pilgrimage in Walldürn is the blood miracle of Walldürn. A detour to the pilgrimage basilica of St. George in Walldürn is definitely worth it! This impressive baroque church is considered the largest pilgrimage church in southern Germany and is famous for the Miracle of the Holy Blood. Even from the outside, the mighty façade is impressive, while inside, you'll find a magnificent high altar and an extraordinary ceiling painting. A place full of history, tranquility, and spiritual power – perfect for combining a hike with a cultural highlight.

In 1589, the Walldürner pastor Hoffius reported a momentous incident from the year 1330: During a Eucharistic celebration, the Walldürner priest Heinrich Otto overturned the already consecrated chalice out of carelessness. The shed blood of Christ in the form of wine then drew the image of the crucified Christ and eleven individual heads of Christ with a crown of thorns on the corporal. The terrified priest hid the corporal behind a stone on the altar. 50 years later he eased his conscience on his deathbed and named the hiding place of the cloth. The linen cloth was found in the named place, the miracle became widely known and a great veneration of the cloth began.
