In the Viroinval region there are many silent witnesses from days long gone, including tombs from the Bronze Age, the remains of a Roman villa and the cemeteries of Merovingians and Carolingians. People lived here since the old stone age, but the real development of the area only started in the Middle Ages. At that time the wood industry was flourishing; afterwards the iron industry flourished until the mid-nineteenth century. After that, quarrying was the main industrial activity until 1954. Today tourism is an important source of income.
