On the limestone plateau above the town of Nismes you walk across open dry grasslands and along fragrant pine trees - a very unusual landscape for the Ardennes. The porous, limestone-rich soil provides for this special vegetation: rainwater seeps faster and therefore mainly dry and warm loving plants and animals have settled here.
