In the Middle Ages, two castles were built in Vlatten, each a few hundred meters north and south of the royal palace on the Vlatten stream. The palace itself, which had been the center of a forest administration for centuries, lost its importance when Henry IV donated the southern and most valuable part of the forest district to Archbishop Anno of Cologne.
In 1331, Johann I of Vlatten-Merode acquired the upper castle, the southern of the two castles. After the purchase, the von Merode family later called themselves "von Vlatten" after their new seat.
